Ceramide Cream ODM & Private Label Manufacturing in Korea

Develop ceramide creams and barrier products in Korea — solubility and recrystallisation, the 3:1:1 lipid ratio, packaging fit and market claims.

Ceramides are the least glamorous ingredient on this list and the one most likely to produce a product people repurchase. They are also the one where the gap between "contains ceramides" and "formulated around ceramides" is widest — and where a formulation shortcut shows up months later as grittiness in the jar.

What Is a Ceramide?

Ceramides are lipids. In skin they sit in the outermost layer alongside cholesterol and free fatty acids, forming the lipid matrix that holds the barrier together. In cosmetics they are supplied as synthetic or fermentation-derived materials that are structurally equivalent to the skin's own.

They are declared individually on an ingredient list, which is where most of the confusion starts:

  • Ceramide NP (formerly ceramide 3) — the most widely used, and the default in most briefs.
  • Ceramide AP (formerly ceramide 6-II)
  • Ceramide EOP (formerly ceramide 1)
  • Ceramide NG / NS (formerly ceramide 2)

Products often combine two or three. "Ceramide complex" is a marketing phrase; the label carries the individual INCI names. A brand that wants to make a specific point about its ceramide system should know which ones it is using and why.

The other thing to know up front: ceramides work at very low use levels, and cost per kilogram is high. The active is a small line item in the formula and a large line item in the cost sheet.

Why Brands Are Developing Ceramide Products

Barrier care stopped being a niche several years ago. Consumers who over-exfoliated their way through an acid-and-retinol phase came looking for repair, and "barrier" became a category rather than a feature. Ceramides are its defining ingredient.

What makes it commercially attractive:

  • Repurchase behaviour. A barrier cream that works becomes a routine staple rather than a trial purchase, which changes lifetime value.
  • Low claim risk. Barrier and moisturisation language is comfortably within the cosmetic register in most markets — a real advantage compared with the biotech actives.
  • Range logic. Ceramides extend naturally into body, hand and scalp products, so one formulation investment supports several SKUs. See Korean body care manufacturing.
  • Sensitive-skin positioning. The category tolerates a minimal, fragrance-free product, which is cheaper to formulate and easier to certify.

The commercial catch is that everyone has one. Differentiation comes from the full lipid system, the texture and the honesty of the formulation — not from the word on the front of the pack.

Product Formats We Can Develop

Ceramides are oil-phase materials with high melting points and poor solubility, which narrows the format list considerably.

  • Creams and emulsions — the natural home. Enough oil phase and enough structure to carry the lipids properly. See moisturiser and cream development in Korea.
  • Balms and rich anhydrous formats — excellent carriers, and increasingly popular for barrier positioning.
  • Body lotions and butters — the same formulation logic at a lower cost per unit and a larger fill.
  • Sheet masks with an emulsion essence — workable if the essence has enough oil phase. See Korean sheet mask manufacturing.
  • Water-clear serums and toners — the difficult case. A visually clear, low-oil format cannot carry meaningful ceramide levels without solubilisers that change the sensory profile. If a brief asks for a clear ceramide serum, this is the conversation to have first.

Developing a Ceramide Product: ODM, OEM or Private Label?

Private Label

Very competitive here. Mature barrier cream bases exist with stability data, and the category rewards a proven texture more than a novel one.

ODM

Worth it when the lipid ratio, the supporting actives or a specific sensory target is the differentiator — or when you need a matched range rather than one product.

OEM

For brands moving an existing barrier formula into Korean production. Transfers well when the lipid system and process are documented.

Ceramides are the strongest private label case of the actives on this site. The formulation problem is well solved, good bases exist, and consumers in this category reward a texture that works over a formula that is novel. If your differentiation is brand, packaging and channel, private label barrier creams are efficient and low-risk.

Ceramide ODM development earns its cost in two situations: when you want a specific lipid ratio and supporting system as your technical story, and when you want a matched range — face, body, hand — that shares a sensory signature. A range built from three unrelated catalogue bases feels like three unrelated products, and customers notice.

Formulation Considerations

Solubility is the whole problem. Ceramides are crystalline solids with high melting points and very low solubility in most cosmetic oils. They must be properly dissolved in the oil phase at temperature, and the emulsion must be cooled in a controlled way. Get this wrong and the ceramides recrystallise — sometimes weeks later, showing up as grittiness, a rough after-feel or visible specks. It is the single most common defect in under-developed ceramide products, and it does not appear at time zero.

The 3:1:1 principle. Skin's own barrier lipids are roughly ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids in a defined proportion, and formulations that reproduce a physiological-style ratio perform better than ceramides alone. This is why a serious barrier product carries cholesterol and a fatty acid alongside the ceramide, and why "ceramides plus nothing" is a weaker formula at the same ingredient cost.

Use level versus perception. Effective levels are low — fractions of a percent. Pushing the level up does not linearly improve performance, and it raises both cost and recrystallisation risk. A brand that wants a bigger number on the front of the pack is usually asking for a worse product.

Sensory. Ceramide-rich systems trend rich and occlusive. Making one feel light without losing the lipid load is genuine formulation work and is where ODM development time goes.

Compatibility. Ceramides sit well with peptides, panthenol, niacinamide, centella derivatives and most humectants — see peptide serum development and centella and cica line development for the two most common pairings. High surfactant loads and high alcohol content work against the format.

Preservation. An emulsion with a substantial lipid phase needs a preservative system that partitions correctly between phases. Straightforward, but it must be designed rather than inherited.

Packaging Considerations

  • Tubes — the practical default. Good barrier, no finger contact, cost-efficient, and suited to a cream's viscosity.
  • Jars — expected in the premium barrier segment and visually persuasive, but repeated open contact raises the preservation requirement.
  • Airless pumps and jars — the best of both: jar-like dosing without the contamination path. Higher component cost.
  • Squeeze bottles for body — the sensible choice at larger fill volumes. See Korean body care manufacturing.
  • Sachets and single-dose — useful for sampling in a category that depends on trial.

One packaging-specific caution: a rich cream's fill behaviour is temperature-sensitive, and a viscosity that fills cleanly on one line may not on another. We qualify components alongside the formula through Korean cosmetic packaging sourcing.

Claims and Regulatory Notes by Market

Ceramides are among the easier actives to write claims for, because barrier and moisturisation language sits comfortably in the cosmetic register. Orientation only — not a compliance opinion.

United States. Moisturisation and barrier-support claims are conventional cosmetic claims. The line to watch is treatment language: describing a product as treating eczema, dermatitis or a diagnosed skin condition makes it a drug under the FD&C Act regardless of the label. Brands positioning for sensitive or compromised skin often drift across this line in their marketing copy rather than on the pack. MoCRA registration, listing and safety substantiation obligations apply to imported product.

European Union. Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 governs, with INCI declaration, a Product Information File, safety assessment, an EU Responsible Person and CPNP notification. Moisturisation and barrier claims must satisfy the common criteria, meaning evidential support and no medicinal implication. Instrumental measurement is a normal way to support claims of this type.

Korea. Under the Cosmetics Act, barrier support and moisturisation are general cosmetic claims — they do not fall within the functional cosmetics categories, which cover a defined list of functions such as wrinkle improvement, brightening and UV protection. A ceramide cream is therefore a general cosmetic unless it also contains a listed functional active, which is a simpler registration path rather than a limitation.

MOQ and Development Timeline

We do not publish minimum order figures. On ceramide projects the number is driven by:

  • Lipid system cost. Ceramides are expensive per kilogram even at low use levels, and a multi-ceramide system with cholesterol and fatty acids compounds it.
  • Fill volume. A 50 ml face cream and a 300 ml body lotion have very different economics per batch.
  • Packaging. Stock tubes and jars order in far smaller quantities than custom tooling.
  • Range breadth. A matched face-and-body range spreads development cost but raises the total first order.
  • Route. Private label from an existing base starts lower than ODM development.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my ceramide cream feel gritty after a few months?

Recrystallisation. The ceramides were not fully dissolved in the oil phase, or the emulsion was cooled too quickly or without control, and the lipids came back out of solution over time. It is the defining failure mode of the ingredient, it does not appear at time zero, and it is why the heating and cooling profile is part of the formula rather than a manufacturing detail.

How many ceramides should my product contain?

Most good formulas use one to three, and Ceramide NP alone is a legitimate choice. What matters more than the count is whether cholesterol and a free fatty acid are present alongside them — a physiological-style lipid system outperforms ceramides alone at comparable ingredient cost.

Can I make a clear ceramide serum?

Not easily, and usually not well. Ceramides are crystalline lipids with poor solubility, so a visually clear, low-oil format cannot carry a meaningful level without solubilisers that change the texture and can compromise stability. If clarity is essential to the concept, this is the first thing to discuss — often the answer is a different format or a different barrier active.

Are ceramides suitable for body and hand products?

Yes, and it is an under-used opportunity. The formulation logic carries over directly, the larger fill improves cost per unit, and barrier claims translate cleanly to body. A face-and-body range sharing a lipid system is one of the stronger ODM cases for this ingredient.

Can I say my ceramide cream repairs the skin barrier?

Barrier-support and moisturisation language is generally within the cosmetic register, but wording that describes treating a diagnosed condition — eczema, dermatitis — is drug language in both the US and the EU. The distinction usually turns on a few words, so agree the claim set before packaging artwork is finalised rather than after.
