The more useful signal is the one we read at work: which ingredients buyers actually name in development briefs, and how those names are shifting. The requests we receive sort into four axes. Each has its own consumer story, its own manufacturing bill, and its own way of going wrong.
The Biotech Axis: PDRN, Exosomes and the Clinic Story
The strongest current movement in briefs is toward ingredients whose story starts in Korean aesthetic clinics. Consumers meet these names in a treatment context, search for them afterwards, and arrive at topical products with awareness already built — a category a new brand does not have to explain from scratch.
PDRN
PDRN is the axis's anchor request, and most briefs arrive with the clinic association doing the selling. From a manufacturing seat the ingredient is cooperative — water-soluble, comfortable in serums and ampoules, added after cool-down because it dislikes heat. The sourcing question is not whether material is available but which material you are buying: two suppliers quoting the same percentage can differ substantially in fragment profile and purity, and the figure itself may describe the raw material as supplied or the actual active content. The trap: the clinic story does not translate directly into product marketing. Exosomes
Exosome briefs need slowing down before they speed up, because the word covers several materially different raw materials — plant-derived, fermentation-derived and cell-culture-derived — that are not interchangeable in sourcing, documentation or where the finished product can realistically be sold. Source selection is the first decision on this ingredient, not a detail, and it should be made against your full market list rather than your first market. The trap is buying the word rather than the material: two products marketed on exosomes can contain raw materials with almost nothing in common.
Peptides
Peptides are the axis's mainstream wing — the biotech story without the biotech friction. Buyers ask for them because consumers already understand them and retailers are comfortable stocking them. Manufacturing is predictable: the materials are stable, well characterised and happy across a wide format list. The sourcing catch is dilution. Commercial peptide materials are supplied at very low active concentration in a carrier, so a quoted percentage can refer to the supplied solution or to the active peptide, and the two differ by orders of magnitude. The Barrier Axis: Ceramides and the Hydration System
If the biotech axis is the loudest, the barrier axis is the largest. Briefs increasingly frame every product as barrier-respecting, and the ingredient requests follow: ceramides by name, supported by humectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin. The consumer story is repair — an audience that over-exfoliated its way through an actives phase and came back wanting comfort — and it produces the repurchase behaviour that makes the category commercially attractive.
Manufacturing is where this axis earns respect. Ceramides are crystalline lipids that must be properly dissolved and cooled under control, or they recrystallise weeks later as grittiness that no time-zero test catches. Hyaluronic acid deserves one sourcing note: a commodity by name, but not by grade. Molecular weight decides how the material behaves, and a brief that says only "hyaluronic acid" has not yet chosen an ingredient.
The trap on this axis is the front-of-pack number. Effective ceramide levels are low, and pushing the level up for marketing reasons raises cost and failure risk without a matching gain.
The Soothing Axis: Cica and Its Companions
Centella is the ingredient most identified with K-beauty abroad, and it remains a constant in briefs — usually as the anchor of a sensitive-skin line, often alongside panthenol and allantoin. The consumer story is calm: an antidote category to actives fatigue, and one where "made in Korea" itself carries credibility with the end customer.
The sourcing problem is invisible on the label. The extract's declared name is identical whether the material was standardised to a stated active content or simply macerated from leaves, so the specification — not the INCI list — is the only thing that tells you what you bought. Colour and odour are the other decisions buyers skip: real centella extracts tint the product and carry a herbal note, and both have to be chosen rather than discovered. The trap is saturation. Cica products exist at every price point, so a new entry needs either a substantiated specification story or a format the category has not filled.
The Fermentation Thread
Running underneath all three axes is the request for fermented materials — ferment filtrates of yeast, rice and botanicals that connect a formula to Korean beauty tradition. Briefs rarely make a ferment the hero; they ask for "the fermented story" as a supporting layer under a modern active.
From a sourcing seat, ferments are friendly to formulate with and awkward to compare. A ferment filtrate is defined as much by its supplier's process as by its name, so two materials with near-identical declarations can be quite different inputs, and consistency between batches is a supplier-qualification question rather than a formulation one. The practical advice: treat a ferment like a botanical extract — ask for the specification, ask what is measured in it, and decide what it contributes beyond the story. Sourcing Questions That Work on Every Axis
The axes differ, but the discipline that separates a good sourcing decision from a fashionable one is the same five questions.
- What exactly is the material? Specification and certificate of analysis before any formulation route is chosen. On every axis above, the marketing name covers a range of materially different inputs.
- What does the number mean? Supplied material or active content, particle count or percentage. Two products advertising the same figure are often not comparable.
- What can you say about it where you sell? The claimable range for the same ingredient differs from market to market, and it should be confirmed per destination before development — not after artwork.
- What is the stability bill? Heat-sensitive actives, recrystallising lipids, tinting extracts, preservation-hostile systems — every trending ingredient carries a testing cost, and it lands on the calendar, not just the invoice.
- Is the ingredient the differentiator, or is your execution? On a crowded axis the honest answer is usually execution, which changes what you should spend on.
The route decision follows from the answers.
